True white is #FFFFFF — the brightest value an RGB screen can display. It is the standard backdrop for product photos and mockups: a pure white canvas reflects no color of its own onto the subject, so product colors stay true. Designers also pull up a full-screen white image to check a new monitor for dead pixels and uneven brightness.

White backgrounds are also a favorite for video call backdrops, YouTube thumbnails, product mockups and slide decks. A clean white canvas makes your content the star.

Which plain white wallpaper size to download

Take the size that matches your screen and you will never see the question again. On Windows it is under Settings, System, Display, in the box marked display resolution. On a Mac, hold Option and click the Apple menu, then System Information and Graphics/Displays. On a phone, the fastest route is to search for the model name and the word resolution; manufacturers list it and settings panels usually do not.

If your number is not on the list, take the next size up. A flat color has no detail to lose, so shrinking one costs nothing at all, and a plain white wallpaper cut down from a larger file looks exactly like one made at that size in the first place. The only thing a larger file costs you is a slightly longer download, and here that is measured in kilobytes.

Pure white, off-white and light gray

Pure white is the right answer when you need a reference: photographing a product, judging whether another white leans warm or cool, or checking what a display does at full output. Nothing on this site is tinted, so what you get is the value itself and not somebody's idea of a pleasant white.

It is not always the comfortable answer. Filling a large screen with maximum brightness in a dark room is tiring to sit in front of, and the usual fix is the brightness control rather than a different file — a dimmed pure white and an off-white look much the same, and only one of them is still a known value. If you specifically want a softer surface rather than a dimmer one, that is a different color, not a different size, and it is worth saying so rather than pretending white covers every case.

Plain white wallpaper on a phone

Phones treat a light lock screen differently from a dark one. Many will flip the clock and status icons to dark so they stay readable, which is exactly what you want, but it does mean a plain white wallpaper changes more of the interface than a photograph would.

There is one real cost. On an OLED phone a white screen lights every pixel at full output, which is the most power-hungry thing you can ask the panel to display; a plain black background is the opposite end of that trade. If battery life over a long day matters more to you than the look, that is the page to take instead.
